The building itself dates back to King Charles II, who allegedly took refuge here (hiding in the main fireplace) whilst being chased by the Roundheads. Legend has it that the Duke of Wellington also made use of the building whilst planning his strategy against Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo. Built as an Inn in 1451, the building was originally known as "The Smithies Arms".
